Symbol of the Mediterranean, olive oil is an important raw material in beauty treatments as it is rich in lipids that are very like those in our skin’s hydrolipidic film. This therefore includes squalene, wax esters, free fatty acids and triglycerides such as palmitic acid, stearic acid, and (the main one) oleic acid, as well as highly important linoleic and linolenic polyunsaturated acids. The composition of olive oil also contains a percentage of non-saponifiable substances, which ensure the stability of the oil and which have significant cosmetic properties. These include anti-oxidant substances such as a-tocopherol, carotenoids and chlorophylls, which are important for the skin as they protect it from damage caused by free radicals in the environment.
The biochemical composition of unrefined olive oil means that in addition to being a source of minerals, vitamins and non-saponifiables, it absorbs really well into the skin and thereby makes a great carrier for active ingredients. It is an indispensable base ingredient for all skin types and all ages. Its softening and calming properties mean it alleviates and tones down redness, whilst also nourishing the skin, giving it a boost of vitamins and sebum-like fatty acids (to replace lost oils) and preventing skin ageing.
