Propolis is a resin that is gathered and partly metabolised by bees. They also use it for building and covering their hive and protecting the honeycomb cells within. The resin is gathered by worker bees in the warmest hours of the day in spring and summer. Bee Propolis has been used since ancient times for its disinfectant and antimicrobial properties.
Propolis looks and behaves like a resin; it is pliable at around 30-35° and flaky at lower temperatures, with a colour that varies from light brown to almost black. It has a characteristic smell with vanilla notes and hints of poplar and birch buds. Propolis is also a complex blend of chemical compounds and a group of researchers from the former Soviet Union used various techniques to separate and identify around twenty of the main ones. The majority of these are phenolic in nature and have a flavonoid skeleton (flavones and flavanols). Propolis extract can be beneficial when used in cosmetics to treat problem skin, deodorants, after-shave lotions and moisturisers, scalp treatments and toothpaste, etc.
